Dr. Ann Lawrence BSc, ND – Licensed Naturopathic Doctor Ann graduated with a Bachelor of Science Honours degree from the University of Guelph in Marine Biology. She then lived overseas in Japan for two years where she first became exposed to acupuncture and Eastern healing methods. Upon returning to Canada she pursued a Master’s of Science in agriculture with a keen interest in the environment and its effects on the health of human beings. All of this education gave her a broad knowledge base in the science of marine, freshwater and agricultural systems. But her true calling was discovered when she first heard about the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and went on to study there, graduating in 1999 as a licensed Naturopathic Doctor in Ontario. This rounded out her education with extensive knowledge of the human body, nutrition, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine and other biomedical sciences.

Dr Lawrence has experience in helping people begin the process of making changes to living the life that they really want! Some of the help comes in the form of dietary changes, herbs and homeopathy that help people feel calmer and more in control already! Then body work such as Bowen can produce unexpected changes as well, as the patient is able to release old patterns held in the body. Dr. Lawrence can help you find your own path for making positive changes in your life.

Bowen Therapy

The original Bowen Technique  is a gentle form of body work in which very subtle specific moves performed over the muscles and connective tissue send messages deep into the body, retrieving cellular memory of a relaxed, balanced way of wellbeing.  Bowen treatments signal the body to reset and take inflammation away from painful muscles, joints, nerves and tendons promoting self-healing and rebalancing the system.

Bowen Therapy - Dragonfly Naturopathic Clinic Ottawa Canada

The Bowen technique is a ‘head to toe’ physical treatment that promotes self-healing and benefits all ages and stages in life. Bowen treatments signal the body to reset and de-flame painful muscles, joints, nerves and tendons to their original blueprint of health thereby addressing pain, postural complaints, injuries and rebalancing of other systems.

How the Bowen Technique Works  In a Bowen Technique session, the patient lies on a table, wearing loosely fitting clothing, and relaxes, while the therapist applies a carefully orchestrated and specifically located series of gentle movements across the body. The movements are composed of a subtle challenge and rolling of muscle, nerve, tendon and connective tissue. The carefully designed pattern of movements is central to The Bowen Technique achieving its holistic benefits, which result in a balancing not only on the structural level and functional systems, but also at the level of the individual’s overall well-being. Addressing the body as a whole, in this way, the Bowen Technique treats beyond the presented symptoms and embraces the physical, chemical, emotional and mental aspects of each person receiving the treatment.

Key to achieving this expansive benefit is the Bowen Technique’s capacity to stimulate a sense of deep relaxation. This deeply relaxed state, both caused by and facilitating the impact of the specific soft tissue moves, seems to act upon the body’s autonomic nervous system, which creates homeostasis at the cellular level. Through this precise resetting of the autonomic nervous system’s action, while in a state of profound relaxation, the individual’s body is freed to find its own natural balance.

What to Expect During a Bowen Session  During the actual treatment session, the Bowen Therapist will apply the movements in a series of patterns. The therapist leaves the room between the application of each pattern in the series so as to allow the patient the space to fully achieve the deepest relaxant effects and to avoid interfering with the patient’s energetic realignment. Sessions usually last one hour. Often no more than two to five sessions are required for the treatment of most conditions. Treatments will generally be scheduled at 7-day intervals.

Conditions Treated by Bowen  The soothing and restorative effects of Bowen treatment have a wide range of applications. Through practical experience Bowen practitioners have been increasingly expanding the range of conditions that the technique has been found to effectively treat.

Who Can Receive Bowen The Bowen Technique is safe to use on anyone, from the newborn to the elderly, as there are no vigorous manipulations employed in the treatment. Yet, despite the gentleness of its application, the Bowen Technique achieves profound, substantial, rapid and lasting relief from a wide spectrum of conditions. Among the benefits it achieves in the process are the reduction of physical, emotional and mental stress; improvement in joint mobility, circulation of lymphatic and venous fluids and assimilation of nutrients; the elimination of toxins. In place of the illness and discomfort experienced with the conditions listed above, Bowen introduces a state of ease and well being.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to Expect During an Initial Naturopathic Consultation

During the initial one hour consultation, the ND will take a thorough history so that the underlying issues surrounding your condition or concern can be addressed. A physical examination with clothes on (not internal) will also aid the ND in ascertaining what path to take. The ND will then determine which lifestyle, nutritional, herbal, homeopathic or other types of therapy may best suit your case at which point a joint decision with you will be made as to how best to proceed.

The follow-up visits are usually ½ hour in length and the 2nd visit will usually be within 3-4 weeks of the initial consultation. During that time the ND may ask you to get blood tests or other information gathering as well as start the initial treatment protocol. During the second visit a full plan is usually completed and you will generally not need to return for at least another month.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Are the services of a Naturopathic Doctor covered by insurance?

Many private and company health insurance plans cover naturopathic treatments. Patients and employers are encouraged to request that their policy include coverage of all naturopathic services. Check with your provider to confirm your plans coverage.

What is the difference between a Homeopathic and a Naturopathic Doctor?

A Homeopathic Practitioner uses only a homeopathic approach. Naturopathic Doctors, on the other hand, use homeopathic medicine as one of the therapies integrated into a total treatment plan. NDs are the only health care professionals trained in homeopathy as part of their standard educational program and are examined in homeopathy for licensing purposes.

How are Naturopathic Doctors in Ontario trained?

Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine have a minimum of 7 years of training: 3 to 4 years of premedical studies at a university followed by the 4 year intensive full time program at an accredited college of Naturopathic Medicine. The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto is the only one in Canada (there are 4 colleges in North America).

After graduating from one of these colleges, the Ontario ND must pass rigorous North American-wide standardized licensing exams to obtain a license. NDs in Ontario are regulated by the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy-Naturopathy.
