Counselling approaches – Therapeutic Approach
Clinical Counselling now offered at the Living Science Wellness Centre by Leigh Jolly, MSW, RSW, RHN A clinical counsellor who specializes in depression and anxiety, stress management, Self-Esteem, Substance Use and Food Addiction, Fatigue and Sleep Disturbances, Disordered Eating or Obesity.
The Canadian Professional Counsellors Association holds the philosophy that every human being possesses equal dignity and worth. From this fundamental belief spring two additional principles:
1. that everyone is entitled to his or her feelings and views, and
2. that everyone deserves to be treated with respect.
Health, change and growth are possible when feelings and views are expressed and supported within a safe environment. Validating behaviour patterns and painful feelings which derive from significant unresolved conflicts and losses, and challenging the person to take risks for implementing new ways of relating, summarize the counselling process. This process is also person centred and goal directed which means the client is believed to be capable of making healthy choices when enough options are available.
The professional counsellor guards the client’s right to confidentiality and is careful to maintain appropriate boundaries in the counsellor-client relationship. Another mark of professionalism is the desire to expand one’s repertoire of therapeutic interventions. Insuring the client’s right to getting the appropriate help needed, means referral when the counsellor’s own level of knowledge is out of his/her scope of practice. The ability to face life’s losses, conflicts, and challenges in an intentional way defines the counsellor’s own level of self-awareness.
Everyone can benefit from an understanding of counselling processes and skills, and therefore these skills and special knowledge are not the sole property of certain professional groups.
The Canadian Professional Counsellors Association is committed to upholding standards of professional training, supervision, and practice so that people can get the help they need.
